An incident not unlike that which befell the city of the Xanthians, who, besieged by Brutus, flew pell-mell, men, women, and children, into such a frenzied craving for death that there is nothing done to escape death which they did not do to escape life; so that only with difficulty could Brutus save a very small number of them.
